Introducing the Newsletter
Please read this first if you're new here.
UPDATED: January 19, 2026
Greetings, and thank you for visiting.
If you have an interest in preventive medicine and science-based lifestyle recommendations for improving your health, please check out this website’s articles and the newsletters upon which they are based.
What I present here are timely, science-based, original articles covering a wide range of preventive medicine and public health topics, along with critical commentaries on the politics and economics of the American healthcare system.
In the past, I only offered free subscriptions to my newsletter, as a health education public service. However, Substack’s latest algorithm “prioritizes” authors who generate paid subscriptions, which produces an income for their business. The new algorithm curtailed the number of new free subscriptions.
In order to continue growing my readership, I’ve enabled a paid subscription option at the lowest rate Substack will allow. Paid subscribers receive bonus newsletters with health news, tips, and recipes. They gain full access to all paywalled Posts, and receive a free download of my mobile phone app for smarter grocery shopping.
Please help me make the world a healthier place, one person at a time, by encouraging others to subscribe. Free subscribers can gain temporary access to paywalled posts by referring new subscribers using these buttons:
How the Newsletter Came About
At the beginning of the COVID-19, I was sending medical information to my friends and family members to help them survive. Because they shared the information with people in their own social circles, I created a website for my expanding network of readers so they could access information that I had previously shared.
Thankfully, there came a time when there was less to say about covid, and I began covering other subjects related to health and preventive medicine. When I learned that Substack was more suitable for publishing a newsletter and updating previous posts, I became a content creator.
Writing about science-based healthy lifestyles has kept me abreast of what’s going on in public health and preventive medicine, and keeps me connected to the online medical community. It also affords me an ongoing opportunity to be of services. This endeavor inspires me to keep learning new things, and allows me to share what I learn with others. I hope that will contribute to the betterment of society.
Why Healthy Living?
I’ve spent a half-century as a primary-care physician, health educator, patient advocate, and medical author promoting preventive medicine and healthy living. It is my sincere hope that the information I present in my newsletters will prove useful for anyone who wants to enjoy a healthier life. You might say that my mission is to spread the word about healthy living being good medicine.
A healthy lifestyle reduces the risks for a great many chronic illnesses, contributes to longevity, and substantially improves people’s physical and mental well-being. It is hard to feel happy and fulfilled when we are ill. Good health is really our most precious asset. A healthy population is a nation’s most valuable natural resource.
If you’ve subscribed, but haven’t yet received any newsletters, please check your Spam folder. If they are there, mark those emails as “Not Spam.” If they aren’t in your Spam folder, look under your Promotions tab or in the Trash folder. Some email programs seem to have a mind of their own.
What to Expect
Newsletters cover a wide range of subjects that interest me, as well as topics requested by readers. Subscribers can contact me directly by replying to any emailed newsletter. Followers can reach me via Substack Notes, where our discussions are shared with a wider audience. I truly appreciate reader interaction, which makes this project a collaborative effort.
I may not post new articles with any regularity because I am continually updating previously published articles. With ever more articles in my Archive, keeping the information current has been consuming much of my time.
Your Privacy
According to Substack, they protect the privacy of subscribers' email addresses, and use industry-standard security measures to protect the data they hold. Substack won't sell any of its users’ personal data to third parties. People who unsubscribe are permanently deleted from the database.
I will not use your email address for any purposes other than emailing newsletters and responding to your inquiries or comments. I value my own privacy as much as I respect yours.
Why Public Comments are Turned Off
Subscribers are always able to contact me directly by email, simply by replying to any emailed Newsletter. I have not, however, enabled public comments, likes, and restacks for my Posts. That’s because I’m unwilling to spend time moderating comments and removing those with misinformation. I don’t want to provide a forum where anonymous people can maliciously spread falsehoods, provoke arguments, and attack others.
Disclosure
Other than the percentage I receive from paid subscriptions and subscriber donations, I receive no financial support, monetary incentives, or industry sponsorships for publishing this newsletter. I am not employed by any entity or affiliated with any institution. I am not promoting any services. The only products I offer for sale are the books that I’ve written.
The opinions expressed in my articles, except where otherwise noted, are entirely my own. They are shaped by my conscience and my concern for the health, education, and welfare of the American public. Any mentions of specific products or services are meant only to serve as representative examples, and do not constitute endorsements.
Although I receive dividends from inherited shares in a pharmaceutical corporation, I do not promote or prioritize any of their products. I have no other financially beneficial relationships with any businesses or industries, and have no hidden agendas. The medical information and suggestions I offer are based upon my personal understanding of the best scientific evidence available at that time.
